Östersjö Pirat is mainly a collective of creative minds. For now, we mainly host rave parties and observe the Swedish underground scene.
Nowadays, politicians seem to mess up repeatedly, rapidly crashing our unique and multicultural land. Kids are being shot on the streets, unemployment rates are peaking, and war is on the doorstep. No wonder people experience more mental health problems now than ever before. No wonder people isolate. The government fails us and becomes more and more controlling; it feels like all we can do is endure the storm.
It's tough, but nothing gets better if you just walk around the same old streets worrying. In this socially grey land we call Sweden, I believe subculture might be our only hope. That's where we freaks find our sense of unity.
We want to spark a societal change
The original idea of Östersjöpirat (Radio) was to create a kind of radio station where we would host shows with curated music and discussions about music, art and culture. I believe that with a platform like this, we could widely broadcast awareness of the local culture and bring back some of the colorful experiences similar to what we saw during the boom of the live scene in the 90s.
I tried hosting the radio for a while, but the project seemed a bit too ambitious to do on my own. But who knows—maybe someday we'll get our act together and gather a crew big enough to build the platform I'm dreaming of.
In the meantime, I'm happy if I can somehow help the underground scene grow and maybe even inspire small creatives to do what they do and participate in their local scene to help it survive.
We need to keep showing love to our local collectives, artists, venues, dancers, producers and DJs, sound systems and train-car writers — or basically anyone contributing to any type of culture. Just keep on doing your thing, and your people will eventually find you.
